The Only 5 Questions You Need To Ask To Understand Your Target Audience

You’ve been told time and time again that you need to understand your target audience, but how do you actually get to know them?

We’ve broken this down into 5 questions and these are the only 5 questions you need to ask to really understand your target audience.

So let’s jump right in with the first question 👇

1)    Who Are they?

This is the easiest question – who is your target audience? This is where you want to describe all that boring (but important), basic demographic data that everyone knows about their target audience. How old are they, where do they live, are they married, what’s their job, etc.

We’re off to a great start, but social media is all about communication. So really, you need to ask questions that help you become an expert at communicating with your audience. This leads to our next question.

2)    How can you relate to your audience?

So next ask yourself, if I was friends with a person in my audience, what would we talk about? This question will give you an overview of their likes, dislikes, and who they are at the core, and will really help you find ways to relate to them.

3)    What are their deepest fears and how does what I offer, help them avoid this?

These are their pain points, but you need to explore them further than surface level. They might not fully understand their pain points OR how your product or service even relates to their pain point, so you will need to educate them. To do this, you really need to understand the core problems.

4)    What are the best methods to communicate with this person?

How and when should you contact them, where can you reach them, and what communication channels do they use? Explore what social media they use (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc.) and when do they use them.

5)    How can I make sure that they listen to what I have to say?

This is basically how to catch their attention and keep their attention. What kind of content are they interested in, and what content are they not interested in? It’s important to understand the topics they enjoy, the activities they like, and the other types of content they consume.

💡 The Big Picture

Once you finish asking these 5 questions, you will have a much better understanding of your target audience, which can then be used to develop your social media strategy, determine your content pillars, and reach your business goals!
